# Updating to 2.9.3

### Quick version

1. Stop your server.
2. Replace the old `HelpCommand-2.9.2.jar` with `HelpCommand-2.9.3.jar`.
3. Start your server.

That's it. **Your config.yml is not touched and your help pages will look exactly the same.**

***

### What happens to your config

2.9.3 adds MiniMessage support, but it will **not** switch you over automatically.

On first startup the plugin adds one new setting to the bottom of your `config.yml`:

```yaml
format: LEGACY
```

`LEGACY` means the `&` colour codes you are already using. Because your config was written before MiniMessage existed, you stay on `LEGACY` and nothing about your messages changes.

You will see this in your console, which is normal:

```
[HelpCommand] Format: LEGACY (this config predates MiniMessage support)
[HelpCommand] Format: set 'format: MINIMESSAGE' in config.yml to opt in
```

Everything else in your config is left alone.

***

### Optional: switching to MiniMessage

Only do this if you want to. `LEGACY` is fully supported and is not going away.

**You cannot mix the two formats.** Switching means rewriting every message in your config.yml in MiniMessage syntax. For example:

| LEGACY                                    | MiniMessage                      |
| ----------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| `&aHello`                                 | `<green>Hello`                   |
| `&b&lTitle`                               | `<aqua>Title`              |
| `<GRADIENT:FF0000>text</GRADIENT:0000FF>` | `<gradient:#ff0000:#0000ff>text` |

To switch:

1. **Back up your config.yml first.**
2. Rewrite your messages in MiniMessage syntax.
3. Change `format: LEGACY` to `format: MINIMESSAGE`.
4. Run `/hc reload`.

MiniMessage requires **Paper** or a fork of it. If your server does not support it, the plugin logs a warning and keeps using `LEGACY` instead of breaking.

### If something looks wrong

* **Messages showing `&a` or `<green>` as plain text** — your `format` does not match how your messages are written. Check the `format` value at the bottom of your config.
* **Colours disappeared after switching to MINIMESSAGE** — the messages are still in legacy syntax. Set `format` back to `LEGACY` and run `/hc reload`.
* **Rolling back** — put the 2.9.2 jar back. Your config still works with it; the extra `format` line is simply ignored by the older version.
